How to Brainstorm Names Without Falling in Love Too Early

The single biggest failure mode in naming isn't a bad name — it's committing emotionally to one candidate before you've checked whether it's usable.

Separate generation from evaluation

Do them in two distinct sessions, ideally on different days. Generating and judging at the same time makes people anchor on whatever came out first, good or not.

A structure that works

1. Generate 20-30 raw candidates with no filtering at all

2. Sleep on it — literally wait a day

3. Cut the list to 5-8 based on gut reaction alone

4. Only then run availability checks on the survivors

If you check availability before you've generated enough options, you'll rationalize keeping a mediocre name just because it's free.

This ordering matters more than people expect — checking too early quietly narrows your creativity to whatever happens to be unclaimed.
