TLD Guide 2026: When .com Isn't the Only Option

For two decades, a company without the .com looked incomplete. That's loosened — but not evenly, and not for every kind of business.

When an alternate TLD works fine

• .io has become a default for developer tools and technical products

• .co reads as a clean, modern .com substitute for consumer brands

• Country-code TLDs work well for locally-scoped services

When it doesn't

If you're building anything transactional — e-commerce, fintech, healthcare — the .com still signals legitimacy to a meaningful slice of your customers, and typo-driven traffic will still land on whoever owns it.

The defensive move

Even if you launch on an alternate TLD, buy the .com if it's available and redirect it. A quick registrar search across a handful of TLDs at once beats checking them one at a time.
